Ten years ago, specialty coffee production in Rwanda was just a distant dream for many small landholders in Rwanda who had survived the tragic genocide of the mid-1990s. But thanks to tremendous support from USAID, the PEARL development project, and investors across the specialty coffee industry, Rwanda has been able to hold its first Cup of Excellence competition and Bufcoffee has risen to become a leader in the Rwandan specialty coffee movement. Delicately processed, fermented and dried on raised African beds, our Nyarusiza is a beautiful example of the complexity and balance that can be achieved through skilled farming and grading. A sweet lemon citrus acidity complements the overwhelmingly lush and juicy body. Sophisticated ginger and cinnamon spice creates a balance with black currant and ripe plum flavors layered in a smooth finish.

Sumatra Mandheling Fair Trade Organic (0102)
Universally recognized as one of the world’s most sought after coffees, our Mandheling comes from a region called Gayoland in northwest Sumatra. Named for the people who inhabit the area and nurture this rare coffee, it is grown on very small farms—no more than 3-5 acres—under native shade trees in the Gayo mountains at elevations exceeding 3,800 feet. Each grower processes his own coffee, then sun-dries the beans on handmade drying tables. They are then double hand-sorted before being sold to the world’s most discerning coffee buyers. Coorpol of Brazil Fair Trade Organic - Roasterie Reserve (111-0898)
The small cooperative of Coorpol began in 2006 with 40 small producers in the small growing region of Cartinga, Minas Gerais working together to obtain a better price for their coffee. Since then, this small cooperative has grown to include nearly 75 growers bringing 515,000 kilos of coffee to the fair trade market per year.
This coffee is surprisingly sweet and complex with hints of black currant, ripe summer cherry and dark raspberry. A wonderful mellow acidity beautifully balances the silky smooth, almost buttery body, finishing with elegant toasted almond notes. This superb cup quality is evidence of excellent husbandry and attention to detail throughout the difficult natural drying process.
